As we are moving deeper and deeper into the digital age, smartphones are becoming an indispensable part of our lives. These handheld devices have already replaced many of our daily use items with notepads or calculators. Now, Samsung is trying to change the official government ID with its Galaxy S smartphone 20.
The Seoul-based company recently announced that they have partnered with the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), Bundesdrei (bdr), and Deutsch Telecom Security GmbH to make their Galaxy S20 series the official smartphone ID for German citizens Can go
So now, German citizens who own the Galaxy S20 can easily sign up for the EID program, which offers the country to replace physical identity proofs with their physical versions.
To sign up for the program’s 20 users need to tap your device to the NFC-enabled physical ID and enter a PIN. As soon as they do so, the information will go directly to the authorities for the authentication process. After successful authentication, users can show authorities using their Galaxy devices to open bank accounts or ask for IDs.
Now among all security concerns, it is Samsung’s new Secure Elements (ESE) that is possible for the chip, which is embedded in the Galaxy S20 series smartphones. According to Samsung, ESE, which is the company’s dedicated security chip, currently offers the highest level of security in the smartphone industry.
In addition, Samsung’s security solution also complies with the EU’s EIDAS regulations. It is essentially a set of rules that are followed under the European Union for citizens of nations to use their EIDs or electronic IDs rather than physical ones like passports.
Now, Samsung is not the only company trying to normalize the use of electronic ID in countries. According to previous reports, Apple has also been working hard for quite some time, to replace physical government IDs with their devices.
However, it seems that Samsung’s solution will be implemented first as Germany is preparing to allow its citizens to use the Galaxy S20 series of smartphones as official government IDs in the country.
